Blue Wave Tactics Shift Toward Gun Culture in Rural Heartland

October 29, 2026 • 2 min read

A select group of Democratic candidates is attempting to break traditional party molds by leaning heavily into their identities as gun owners and hunters. Facing uphill battles in deeply red districts, these politicians are betting that showcasing their firearm credentials can neutralize a perennial Republican advantage and help them reclaim rural voters who often feel alienated by national Democratic rhetoric on gun control.

In Wisconsin’s first district, Mitchell Berman is making his outdoorsman persona central to his campaign. His advertisements feature him fishing with a sidearm for protection against local wildlife and skeet-shooting targets labeled as data centers. For Berman, carrying a weapon isn’t about politics but survival in the North Woods, where encounters with bears and wolves are real possibilities. While the district has historically favored Republicans, recent polling suggests this cultural pivot may be closing the gap between Berman and incumbent Representative Bryan Steil.

Similar strategies are playing out in Texas’ 15th district, where Bobby Pulido is blending his background as a Tejano singer with a lifelong passion for hunting. Pulido doesn’t hide his affinity for weaponry, frequently sharing videos of long-distance target practice and displaying hunting trophies in his home. He argues that in the Rio Grande Valley, firearms are simply a way of life rather than a partisan talking point, noting that local fundraisers often happen at shooting ranges rather than golf courses.

These efforts come at a critical moment for the party as it looks to diversify its appeal among Latino and rural populations. By presenting themselves as responsible gun owners who understand the practical needs of country living, Pulido and Berman hope to prove that Democratic values can coexist with Second Amendment traditions. If successful, their campaigns could provide a blueprint for how future Democratic candidates navigate the culturally charged terrain of America’s heartland.
