From Classroom to Corporate Giant: The Meteoric Rise of Michael Mai

November 5, 2026 • 2 min read

In a striking transition from education to industry, Michael Mai has officially joined the ranks of the world’s wealthiest individuals. Once an elementary school teacher in the southern Chinese city of Zhongshan, Mai is now the billionaire chairman and CEO of Crown New Materials Technology. His sudden ascent coincided with the company’s explosive debut on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange this week, turning a business specializing in industrial adhesives into a financial powerhouse overnight.

The surge began when shares of Crown New Materials skyrocketed during their first day of trading, climbing as much as 787 percent from their initial filing price. This dramatic spike pushed the value of individual shares from under three dollars to over twenty-two dollars at one point. Based on his current holdings, Forbes estimates Mai’s net worth at roughly 2.5 billion dollars. He isn’t the only member of his family to benefit from the windfall; his sister and vice-chairperson, Mai Huixia, also entered billionaire status with an estimated fortune of 2 billion dollars.

Founded in 2000, Crown New Materials operates five manufacturing plants across China and Vietnam. While tape might sound simple, the company provides critical binding agents used by some of the most influential tech firms globally, including Apple and Tesla. Their specialized products hold together everything from semiconductor chips in smartphones to structural components in electric vehicle roofs, making them an essential link in the high-tech supply chain.

Despite the euphoria surrounding its launch, the company has already urged investors to remain rational as share prices dipped slightly following Tuesday’s peak. The timing of this success is particularly notable given the broader instability within Chinese markets. With domestic indices sliding recently due to weak consumer spending and fears regarding artificial intelligence bubbles, Beijing has had to step in with massive capital injections to stabilize exchange traded funds against a backdrop of ongoing international trade tensions.
