Gravity Defied as Tesla Blends Supercar Speed With Rocket Science

October 16, 2026 • 2 min read

Elon Musk has always promised the future, but he delivered something closer to science fiction on Thursday at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas. In a high octane display of engineering, Tesla finally unveiled its redesigned next generation Roadster through a series of stunts that saw the vehicle literally take flight. Using a combination of fan based suction and cold gas thrusters developed alongside SpaceX, the car climbed a massive curved ramp, flipped entirely upside down in mid air, and landed safely, proving that the boundary between automobiles and aircraft is beginning to blur.

The spectacle was not just about the acrobatics; it was a masterclass in raw power. Musk announced that specific versions of the Roadster can now sprint from zero to 60 mph in less than one second, far surpassing the limitations of traditional tire grip. By utilizing an integrated thruster system that generates several times more force than rubber on asphalt, Tesla claims they have solved the physics problem of acceleration. During the event, the car lived up to the hype by launching over a lineup of other Teslas and a semi truck in what looked more like a movie sequence than a product reveal.

While enthusiasts have been waiting since 2017 for this machine to hit the streets, Tesla executives confirmed that official production will not begin until 2028. Pricing remains slightly ambiguous compared to earlier estimates, but early reservation tiers suggest different levels of intensity for buyers. A performance model requires a fifty thousand dollar deposit, while those seeking the thrust version with acceleration capabilities must put down two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. For an elite few, there is also an invite only single seat Rocket variant equipped with a full flight system.

As the dust settled in Texas, Musk leaned into the theatricality of the moment, joking that flying cars are officially real. This latest venture positions the Roadster as perhaps the ultimate evolution of human driven vehicles before autonomy takes over completely. Though it took nearly a decade longer than originally planned to arrive, Tesla seems intent on ensuring that when this car finally hits the pavement—and occasionally leaves it—it does so with enough force to leave every competitor in its wake.
