Obama Brings Heavyweight Support to Progressive Surge in Detroit

October 25, 2026 • 2 min read

Former President Barack Obama descended upon Detroit this weekend, lending his significant political weight to Abdul El-Sayed in a high stakes push for the US Senate. The timing of the appearance is calculated for maximum impact, coinciding with the start of Michigan’s in person early voting window and arriving just ten days before voters head to the polls. Thousands of supporters gathered outside Cass Technical High School, creating an electric atmosphere as they awaited the endorsement of a figure who remains immensely popular among Detroit’s predominantly Black electorate.

El-Sayed has run a bold campaign centered on Medicare for All and a strict refusal to accept corporate PAC money, earning him endorsements from progressives like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. However, his path has been fraught with tension. He has faced intense scrutiny and some of the most aggressive Islamophobic attacks seen in decades, largely due to his outspoken criticism of US military aid to Israel and his description of the conflict in Gaza as genocide. These positions sparked a massive financial counter offensive from groups like AIPAC, which reportedly spent millions attempting to derail his candidacy.

Unlike many politicians who shy away from personal attacks, El-Sayed has adopted a confrontational style that earned him the nickname Meandami. During recent town halls, he has pushed back against critics by questioning the premises behind their inquiries into his faith and loyalties rather than simply defending himself. This direct approach marks a departure from traditional Democratic campaigning, though it appears to be resonating with a base tired of establishment norms.

Obama’s arrival in Michigan follows a busy stretch of campaigning across the Rust Belt, including stops in Cleveland where he slammed Donald Trump and Republican candidates for crossing ethical lines during their campaigns. By standing alongside El-Sayed in Detroit, Obama is signaling a bridge between the party’s institutional core and its increasingly vocal progressive wing at a moment when every single vote could determine the balance of power in the Senate.
