The recall affects models such as the Corolla and Yaris, both of which are considered popular among consumers. According to a press release issued by Toyota, the recall is due to a faulty passenger side airbag inflator module which could, over time, degrade and potentially rupture upon deployment. Any vehicles produced between the years of 2011 through 2019, inclusive, will be affected by the recall. It is estimated that 1.12 million vehicles globally are affected by the recall. In the US, the recall affects 815,000 vehicles. All owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification to address the issue. The recall work is free of charge, and to ensure customer safety, the recall work carried out will include either the replacement of airbag inflator module or the inflator assembly. The issue is not related to the previously recalled Takata airbags, since Toyota did not use Takata airbags in the cars affected by this recall. To further ensure customer safety and satisfaction, Toyota is urging owners of affected vehicles to contact Toyota dealerships regarding the recall process. As a result of this recall, Toyota is also extending their Customer Service Agreements to offer additional assistance and reassurance to affected customers. This includes offering a complimentary multi-point inspection as well as payment assistance should any replacement parts be required.
